FESTIVAL FOREWORD
photomonth has grown to become the East London Photography Festival and we are celebrating this development with more than 80 exhibitions and events in 50 galleries and spaces.
Shoot photomonth launches the festival which opens with the first photo-open at the Art Pavilion. Anna Fox gives the photomonth lecture and the portfolio reviews take place over two days at the Whitechapel. The photomonth seminar Photographing the East End is at the Rich Mix and Stephen Gill conducts photo-tours around Hackney Wick.
This year photomonth goes global, creating links with photography festivals around the world. We welcome Emily McInnes, Creative Development Director from CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival who will join a distinguished panel of critics, curators and publishers for the portfolio reviews.
photomonth demonstrates the diversity of contemporary photography. Exhibitions reveal large scale installations, constructed images, panoramic pinhole photography of the Western Sahara, fashion photography from Magnum, cinema banner painters in Bangladesh, elderly Eastenders from the Somali, Bengali, Jewish and Caribbean communities, children’s dreams, drug abuse, Eastern European immigration, the Palestinian Occupied Territories, acid attacks in Bangladesh, phrenology, controversial sexual imagery, hybrid cultures, and important archives documenting demonstrations and daily lives in the East End.
With an international line-up of established and emerging photographers, photomonth offers a comprehensive programme of talks and events designed to promote interest and participation in contemporary photography and focus attention on the changing face of East London.
Regular updates and full details of the photomonth programme can be found on our new website www.photomonth.org
